This fall, I’m joining four brilliant short story writers and teachers for “5 Authors on Story Craft: a 6 Session Seminar” from the Writing Co-Lab. You can take all five sessions (and the final panel discussion), or choose classes a la carte.

In this series of classes, five accomplished and accoladed short story authors join forces to demystify how to write the short story, from beginning to end. With readings, discussion, as well as in-class writing time, you will learn how to closely read stories, decode the author’s craft, and use their techniques to inspire and improve your own creative work. Though designed to be taken sequentially, each class also functions as a stand alone session; enroll in the whole package for a reduced price and to have access to a final panel with all of the teachers answering your questions about writing and publishing, or simply take the session(s) that you need.

You have an idea for a novel, but you don’t know where to start—or maybe you’ve started writing and stalled out, or completed a draft but don’t know how to revise. What drives a great work of fiction? How do you create a story strong enough to sustain a novel? And how do you write 70, 80, or 90,000 words?

This two-hour intensive class tackles the fundamentals of character and conflict; the elements of a satisfying narrative arc; and practical strategies for completing that first draft and beginning your second. Our time together will include presentations, guided writing, and discussion. In the end, you’ll leave with fresh ideas and concrete plans for your novel, as well as three worksheets to apply to this and future writing projects.

This June, I’m relaunching my four-week course on structuring the novel at the Writing Co-Lab.

This course—open to those who have yet to start writing, and those who are revising full-length drafts—uses readings, writing exercises, and outline workshops to help you write a detailed synopsis for your work-in-progress.

Solve Your Novel’s Structure takes a more in-depth approach. Over four weeks, we will use written guides, writing exercises, assigned stories, and discussions to move from idea to detailed synopsis, identifying universal principles that will make your distinct story a satisfying read. Writers will leave with outlines for their works-in-progress and a toolkit of strategies for future projects. The course is designed for both students who have yet to start writing and those who are revising full-length drafts.
