Editorial

My Services
I offer:
•full and partial novel reviews,
• short fiction critiques,
• coaching sessions for beginning, evaluating, and jump-starting projects,
• and query letter editing.

My goal is to help you identify your story’s core, develop character and conflict, and create a complete and satisfying arc. I want you to walk away with a concrete plan—and renewed excitement—for the revisions to come. I read both literary and genre (and genre-bending!) fiction.

Depending on your needs and budget, I can provide editorial memos, line editing, craft lessons, and phone or online meetings.

My Approach
I think of editing as a conversation. My feedback will guide you to think deeply about your characters, themes, and vision. I love a back-and-forth over email, phone, or video; dialogue can unearth our greatest insights.

I maintain a strong focus on craft. We will talk about conflict, plot structure (on the novel, chapter, and scene level), and voice and prose. At the same time, I don’t assume prior knowledge of these craft elements and I’ll supplement my feedback with resources as necessary.

Along the way, we’ll discuss writing strategies to help you meet your goals.

My Teaching Experience
I have six years of experience as MFA faculty and freelance teacher and editor. I’ve taught everything from the fundamentals of fiction to advanced novel structure (along with essays and persuasive writing). My students and clients come from a range of backgrounds—from university-trained and published writers to new writers—and write literary fiction, fantasy, science fiction, horror, YA, and thrillers.

My Rate
I charge an hourly rate of $75/hour. A full novel consultation, with line edits, an editorial memo, and follow-up conversation, usually requires a minimum of 15 hours.

Before we begin, we’ll discuss the scope of work, including manuscript length and desired deliverables, and I’ll give you an estimate. (I never charge you more than the upper limit of that range.) This system allows us to put together custom packages and to add services as desired.

Let’s start!
If you’d like to discuss working together, email me at sbf AT stephaniefeldman.com with some information on your work—what it’s about, where you are in the process—and what you hope to gain from a consultation.
